Welcome Aboard Waterways Cruises

HomePort – Creating Waterways’ New Passenger Terminal on North Lake Union

Since moving to our new HomePort in January, we have been working hard to convert the blighted former boat yard into a comfortable, efficient and attractive terminal for Waterways Cruises’ guests and a home for our growing dining cruise and private yacht charter business. After 8 months, we are proud to see our efforts taking shape to transform a portion of North Northlake Way into a pleasant “front yard” for the Wallingford community.

The unattractive graffiti along Northlake Way is gone, revealing Waterways’ yachts resting at their moorage, framed by the downtown cityscape of Seattle and Lake Union. 300 feet of North Northlake Way frontage is newly enhanced with visually appealing shrubs creating an attractive and much improved streetscape. Waterways Cruises’ blue “Welcome Aboard” banners make identification of the entrance to our HomePort easy to see while improving the visual appeal of the area.

Junk and debris spread across the half acre industrial boat yard is no longer. Buildings are freshly painted white with blue trim as a nod to Seattle’s nautical traditions.  The cleared space now provides our guests with free parking to compliment the street side parking along North Northlake Way.

To the delight of our Executive Chef and his culinary team, we built a spacious state-of-the-art kitchen with brand new equipment allowing us to prepare meals for up to 1,000 guests each day.  It is impossible to walk through the HomePort without being tempted by the irresistible aromas wafting from the kitchen (and all of us eat far too many cookies baked weekly for our weekend cruises).

A new raised brick patio surrounded by attractive plantings provides a generous seating area for guests while they wait to board the yachts for their cruise. It’s a perfect place to be on a sunny day and, and for the inclement weather, we erected a tent to provide refuge from rain and wind during the colder months. The pier at which our yachts are moored is being reconfigured and lighted to accommodate our three large vessels and to make the boarding experience pleasant and comfortable for our guests.

Waterways Cruises HomePort is a work in progress. In short order, we will complete our new woodworking and mechanical shop, which will allow us to continually repair and improve our vessels with our own staff.

In 2012, we plan to expand our waterfront seating, increase our planting and add other enhancements that will improve our guests’ boarding and cruising experience.  Keep tuned!! Better yet join us this fall for an unusually pleasant dining cruise experience.

Bridal Table setup at Waterways Showcase

Showing the best of Waterways at our 17th Annual Showcase

On September 15th, Waterways Cruises displayed their beautifully appointed yachts to over 200 special guests – event planners, group leaders and bridal couples. Everyone had an opportunity to tour the decorated yachts, chat with our captains, meet our outstanding vendors, experience our crew’s friendly service, and sample delicious food prepared by Waterways’ Executive Chef Udo Belew and his team.

Each yacht showcased possibilities for a variety of private events. The Emerald Star showcased corporate events with casino entertainment, murder mystery games and business meeting set-ups and a cocktail party on the upper deck.

The Olympic Star was set for a gorgeous wedding reception, complete with a live jazz ensemble and an elegant ceremony set-up on the open-air deck. Imagine getting married by your Waterways’ Captain with the Seattle skyline as the backdrop for your photos!

And the cozy Destiny featured a birthday party on the water, providing a festive setting for a special occasion that included a baked potato bar, gourmet sliders, and specialty cupcakes.

Twelve of our preferred vendors demonstrated their entertainment skills and products, adding to the festive atmosphere with music, flowers, cupcakes and special décor. We would like to extend our special thanks to Adam’s DJ Service for fun disco tunes, Ryan Shea Smith and Doug Zangar Group for live music performances, A Casino Event for their endless entertainment, Nash Fung for his unique magic tricks, Murder Mystery Players, Inc. for providing the mystery suspense, Grand Event Rentals, The Prop Gallery West and Metropolitan Market for beautiful décor and florals, colorful cupcakes by Happy Cakes & Events. We can’t wait to see the event video produced by MEW Films!

Meet Colleen Guay, Operations Manager

Colleen Guay

Colleen Guay began working with Waterways Cruises in 2007 during her sophomore year at the University of Washington, where she later received a degree in Psychology. She started as a server for public and private events, moved on to the Cruise Director position within several years and recently was promoted to manage Waterways’ operations. In her new position of Operations Manager she oversees crew scheduling, event coordination and internal operations.

Despite the big title, Colleen will still jump at a chance to cut a wedding cake. “My favorite part of the job, hands down, are weddings! I love seeing the boats decorated, prepping for ceremonies and all the traditions associated with bridal events.”

One of Colleen’s most memorable experiences goes back to her first year on the job, when she worked the CEO Summit cruise event aboard The Emerald Star. Each year Microsoft and The Gates Foundation bring in top executives and influential people from around the world to a week of conferences in Seattle, which culminates in a cruise from Kirkland to the Gates’ residence. Colleen remembers, “As I passed appetizers on the very full upper deck, I lost my footing a bit and a person who reached out to steady me said, in his most news-worthy Tom Brokaw voice, ‘I’m sorry young lady…’  Small and unexpected things like this make the experience of working at Waterways truly memorable!”

Adrienne Baerny – Waterways’ new Senior Account Manager

Meet Adrienne Baerny, the latest addition to the Waterways’ Sales and Marketing team! Adrienne joined our company recently, bringing a wealth of experience in event management for corporate groups and her superb knowledge of the tour and travel industry.

Adrienne graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelors Degree in Communication and spent the last 16 years working in sales and marketing, specializing in tourism and event management.  She worked as a Group Sales Manager at Clipper Vacations, managing events for customers and reaching out to travel agents and tour operators to familiarize them with the Clipper products. As a co-owner of Tour Operator Company, Adrienne also is experienced in promoting land tours in the US and Canada.

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus and living all over the world until she was 16,  Adrienne grew up traveling and spending a lot of time on boats. Tourism and cruises are a natural match for her interests, combining her love of event planning and boating. She is excited to once again work with Kathryn Waldeck, our Senior Account Manager for Private Groups and Dining Cruises, who was her teammate at Clipper.

Outside of work, Adrienne is an avid runner – you will find her at a gym every morning, training for marathons or working out. She is excited about finishing her first Half Marathon, Seattle’s Rock and Roll in June and is looking forward to more running adventures.

Jennifer and Jason, celebrating their 12th Wedding Anniversary aboard Waterways Cruises

We were married on July 17, 1999. Jason and I were high school sweethearts and met when we were 17 year old seniors. When it was time to plan for our wedding we didn’t want the traditional Italian wedding that all Jason’s family was used to. We wanted something a little different and memorable. My mom came up with the idea of having our wedding on a boat and Waterways Cruises was the first company I called.Wedding Ceremony aboard the Emerald Star

I loved how all the details were taken care and I loved how Waterways had referrals for everything from the flowers to the cake. We actually used their referral for our wedding cake and it was the best cake we have ever had, hands down! Unfortunately the owner of the bakery moved to San Francisco or we would be ordering a new cake every anniversary!Wedding aboard Waterways Cruises

I remember there was a “wedding planner” assigned to each bride and I loved that. Mine really helped to make sure all the t’s were crossed and i’s were dotted. Sometimes I watch wedding reality shows and I am shocked at how stressful the whole process seems. Our experience may be in the minority, but I didn’t think our wedding planning or the actual event was stressful in the least. It was truly “smooth sailing”.Wedding aboard the deck of Emerald Star We had about 75 close friends and family with us and it was a little misty that afternoon. It didn’t matter though. The scenery was amazing and I felt like each guest received a special gift by sailing with us that afternoon. I have been to lots of weddings and receptions where we end up in the basement or a church hall. What is so special about that? I loved that our guests had an “experience” as opposed to just being a spectator at a wedding.

We cruised with Waterways 3 times since our wedding and each time it brings us back to that special day. Attention to detail is always there, from the host who greets us onto the boat to the delicious food. Waterways Cruises has set the bar high and I would recommend it to all my friends and family.

Ducks on the Dock

The Dog may be man’s best friend, but when it comes to the Waterways’ team – we prefer making friends with animals that cruise the waters just like us. Ducks, a particular pair of ducks to be exact, came into our lives 2 years ago and slowly became a familiar presence at our HomePort.

At first sight they were just a regular duck couple, a beautiful male mallard and a shy female with a missing feather on her chest. In the spring of 2009, the couple was often seen hanging around the Lakeside Event Center patio and peeking into the kitchen. Amused by their boldness, our Chef and the kitchen staff started feeding them occasional food scraps. Before long, a routine developed and the ducks would come to the kitchen door quacking for attention. And then… they disappeared.

The following spring the couple returned and resumed their visits to the kitchen. They built a nest and soon the duck family increased in size with the new baby ducklings quickly joining their parents at the kitchen door. The food scraps were no longer deemed to be a sufficient food source for the young family, and concerned for their health and well-being, our Chef bought a special duck food to ensure adequate nutrition for growing ducks. Feeding the ducks became an honorable responsibility for everyone in the kitchen. Partially a community effort, partially a meditative break after a long day at work, the duck feeding routine is both calming and inspiring to the creative cooking minds of our Chef and his staff.

With great anticipation, we welcomed the arrival of the Waterways’ ducks again this year! After we moved to our new HomePort, not far away from the old location, the couple followed us and did not hesitate to feel right at home with visits to the new kitchen. Lately, Mama duck has not been seen much – we suspect that very soon we will see a new team of ducklings joining the Waterways’ family!

Interview with Kathryn Waldeck – Waterways Event Planner and Account Manager Extraordinaire

How long have you worked at Waterways?

I had my one year anniversary working for Waterways just recently.  I marked it aboard the Emerald Star with a dinner cruise that was highlighted by a champagne toast and Chef Udo’s delicious new menu.  This year has been “eventful” to say the least, after booking and planning trips aboard our yachts for over 50,000 passengers.

What would you say is the best thing about planning weddings or private events?

My favorite thing about planning weddings and other special events is watching our client’s vision unfold from their initial visit to the time they say “I do,” or “SURPISE,” or “Happy 50th, sweetheart.”  While our clients focus on their guest list, I calculate the logistics of fitting their dream event into our beautiful spaces.  From how to maximize square footage to where the Bride can hide from her welcoming groom, I make dreams a reality.

Any great stories you can share from one of your planned events?

One of my first events was a wedding on the Fourth of July last year.  Getting married on Independence Day?  It was a perfect night, topped off with the honor of driving the groom’s parents to their hotel, as taxis were hard to come by that night.  It was awesome!

What did you do prior to Waterways?

I have worked in the travel industry for the last 7 years.  Most recently I completed my 5th year planning events, excursions, and vacations for Victoria Clipper in venues up and down our beautiful coastline and in Canada.

What else should we know about Kathryn?

I was born in Brazil to German, Swiss German, French, Spanish, Portuguese speaking parents.  I am a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Photojournalism. I do freelance newspaper projects on occasion, but mostly I’m hooked by the event planning and travel industry.

Spring Menu for Dinner Cruises

Spring is in the air and Chef Udo is busy creating a new seasonal menu for our Sunset Dinner Cruises. At the recent tasting aboard the Olympic Star, we tried his new spring-themed recipes for dinner entrées.

Chef Udo Belew presenting his new menu

The meat entrée featured Wood-grilled Beef Tenderloin, served with Smashed Red Potatoes, Wild Mushroom Sauté, Roasted Balsamic Red Onion with Gorgonzola and Black Cherry Demi-Glace.  This decadent dish is not only a feast for the eyes, but also has a delicious combination of flavors and textures.

The seafood entrée plays on a tropical theme, showcasing Salmon wrapped in a Banana Leaf, baked with an amazing Coconut-Jasmine Rice and topped with Pineapple Salsa. This entrée has a light and adventurous taste, perfect for a spring evening on the water.

The vegetarian entrée offers season’s best flavors – Hand-made Linguini in a Light Blush Sauce with Sautéed Zucchini, Baby Heirloom Tomatoes, Spinach, Garlic, Basil and Asiago Cheese. This entrée features local produce, a healthy dose of vitamins and is absolutely delicious!

New entrees will be served aboard the dinner cruises starting on April 2nd. Come aboard and experience the taste of spring with Waterways!

Meet Captain Ron Fugere

Captain Ron Fugere is one of the friendly faces our guests see from the moment they board a Waterways’ yacht. Captain Ron joined Waterways Cruises in May of 2009 and since then has been skippering private charters and dining cruises, and entertaining guests with his in-depth knowledge of the Seattle area and his never-ending sense of humor.

Captain Ron grew up on Puget Sound. Before turning his passion for boats into a professional career, he sailed extensively on the waters of the Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. Before joining Waterways Cruises, Ron served as a relief captain and deck hand on a small private ferry in south Puget Sound. He also volunteered aboard a sailing vessel which does charity cruises in Seattle. He even lived aboard his 35’ sailboat, the Pato Feo! Although he now lives ashore, he has a sweeping view of the sound from his home and commutes by ferry. He is never far from the water.

Long before Ron earned his four stripes as a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner license as a Captain, friends and family nicknamed him “Captain Ron”. It is no surprise that he feels very fortunate to be able to make a living doing what he loves most. “Serving as a captain for Waterways Cruises is a dream come true,” says Captain Ron. “I am privileged to serve aboard our small fleet of beautiful vessels on some of the most interesting waterways in the world. There is simply no better view of our lovely city and its natural beauty than from our boats.”  And the best part of the job? “I meet lots of nice people from all walks of life and their happiness is infectious!”

Captain Ron is also an aspiring author and has just completed the manuscript of his first book, “Taking the Time to Live, the Healing Voyage of Pato Feo.” The book is an amusing and sometimes poignant tale of a sailing adventure that changed his life. We can’t wait to read it and learn more about our Captain and the interesting life he has lead following his passion for the sea!

Waterways Cruises’ New HomePort

Several weeks ago we completed our move to Waterways’ new HomePort at 2441 N. Northlake Way. As you notice from the new address, it is incredibly close to the old location. In fact, our new HomePort is literally right “next door” to our old dock – 150’ west to be exact!

For the moving process, we simply loaded our carts and walked across the parking lot and the Eastern Avenue street end – no moving trucks involved! Just the strong backs of our crew and our marina handcarts! The yachts were moved to their new home just a few yards to the west of the old dock. That took all of an hour to move the three boats!

As we make the final touches to our new home, there are already many advantages we can see. We have a lot more space to move around – the site is over two times as large as our old digs and we have “real” storage space .

The parking is spacious, accommodating up to 25 cars in our parking lot, which can increase to over 60 cars if we use valet parking. In addition there is lots of on-street parking available on Northlake Way.  Parking is free… and yes, we are talking about FREE parking in Seattle!

Our staff is treated to a brand new office space, with window views of Lake Union and the Seattle skyline. The new kitchen/commissary is offering our chefs all the space and equipment they have ever dreamed of having.

Jill Fitzpatrick, our always-smiling sales coordinator in the new reception area

Transforming a former boat-yard space into a commercial waterfront is not an easy task. We have big plans for the dock improvements, complete with designing an all-season boarding area with canopies and tents to shelter customers waiting to board our cruises, and a full-service bar to serve you while you wait!

Kathryn Waldeck, our senior account manager, in her roomy new office

Our long-term vision for this place is not only about Waterways Cruises and its new home, but cleaning up the property – eliminating the 50 year old boat yard use, removing graffiti from the fence, and landscaping our frontage along the Northlake Way.  We are not only beautifying the appearance of North Lake Union, but also bettering the ecological environment of the area. Our business has great concern for the marine life and the environment and we are determined to continue implementing our “green” initiative to its full potential at this new location.

Come visit our new HomePort soon!
